FAQ's

Here are some commonly (if not frequently) asked questions from Web hosting seekers. If you have any others, please address them to support@abacoinfo.com.

This FAQ is not meant to replace the standard support section.

How can I get annual or quarterly discounts?

You will receive a 10 percent discount by paying in advance for 12 months, or a 5 percent discount by paying in advance for 3 months. Hosting fees are due and payable no later than 10 days after you are first issued your IP address. No discount shall be given for payments made after this date.

Do you charge additional fees for using the mySQL database?

No. It is included in the package.

Can I have my_own_name.com with Computer Creations?

Yes. You will have your own domain with any of our hosting packages. BTW, we offer only true virtual domains with unique IP addresses. Beware of hosting companies who provide only a shared or temporary IP.

How do I get started?

Simply sign-up by emailing us.

We will assist you any way we can.

How long will I have to wait before I can start?

Not long at all! We will set aside space and a unique IP address for you very quickly. We will contact InterNIC, the registration authority for .com, .net and .edu domains, on your behalf unless other arrangements have been made. Once we activate your account by issuing you the unique IP address, we'll let you know immediately by email. No doubt this will happen before your Web address or URL is registered by the domain name authority.

How do I transfer an existing domain name to your servers?

Simply let it be known that you want to transfer your domain. While waiting for InterNIC or the registration authority to complete the transfer process, keep the connectivity with your current provider. We will provide you with a permanent IP address immediately so you can upload the site on our server, but until your new IP is "propagated" throught the 'net, your new site will be accessed only by typing the IP address. Once InterNIC sends an email saying the transfer is completed, there is a 72 hour propagation period where visitors could go to either site. We advise contacting your previous host at the end of the 72 hours to have them stop the old service. If you use this same provider for your Internet access, you will be able to access your new site once they update their DNS.

When transfering a domain, keep in mind that InterNIC will ask the Administrative or Technical Contact, and not the Billing Contact, to reply to an email authorizing the transfer. If you are one of the authorized contacts (and you should be!) make sure you reply using the same email address you have on file with them.

If the confirmation request from InterNIC is promptly returned, the registration change can usually be processed by them in 72 hours. Meanwhile, all Internet providers are updating their records (DNS tables) to reflect the new worldwide database of IP addresses, including yours!

Who is InterNIC?

The InterNIC is the independent organization responsible for registering top-level domain names, such as .com, .net and .org.

Does Computer Creations support MacIntosh systems?

Sure. You can use the Fetch program to transfer files from your MAC to our system. You can also use Telnet and POP email programs like Eudora, Claris E-mail and Netscape Mail.

Whom can I contact if further questions come up?

Feel free to email us at anytime: support@abacoinfo.com

Are your servers connected 24 hours a day, 7 days a week? If not, when and why are they disconnected?

Yes. They are always connected and always monitored.

Do you run Apache?

Yes. We run Apache on the Linux OS. We do not run the less reliable NT.

What programs can be used to access e-mail (pine, elm, Netscape mail, etc.)?

All POP clients can be used -- any program which downloads the files from our server onto your computer. You can use mail user-agents, which run on our servers, such as pine or vi. You cannot use IMAP.

Can I access my domain address with or without the "www"?

Yes. You will be able to access the domain address with or without the "www" in front of the domain name.

What is an email alias and is it unlimited?

An email alias means if you send mail to support@your--name.com, that address is aliased to whomever needs to receive it. It can be one person or multiple people and these aliases are unlimited--get as many as you need for no extra charge!

Do you have a database system? Cold Fusion? mSQL? Other?

We use mySQL.

Do you have FTP and FTP Anonymous access?

Yes. We provide both FTP and FTP Anonymous access with all accounts.

Do you have a limit on the FTP transfer?

No. There is no limit. You can update your pages an unlimited amount of times, at any time of the day or night.

Is a shell account included?

Yes it is included.

Do you use Netscape's SSL technology?

We use Apache-SSL which is several times more secure than Netscape SSL. It has been certified by Thawte.

Can I run two cron tasks to update pages daily?

Yes.

Are your virtual servers able to work with old and text-mode browsers such as Lynx, or will users with those browsers not find our index.html when putting in only www.our__domain.com (in other words, are they truly virtual)?

They are truly virtual--you get your very own IP address on the web server. They will work with Lynx (as well as search engines).

How many client sites are put on each web server? Do you move sites to different servers if a given server has a high load? Is this monitored?

We do move clients according to demand. We keep the peak CPU load below 50% on all machines. The exact amount of sites on each server varies greatly based on demand per site.

I would like to know if you support VRML 1.0 and 2.0 mime types, wrl and mus?

We support these. You can set your own mime types with your .htaccess file.

Does each virtual server have its own log files? We already have our own custom web stats apps, so what we really need is the raw log files and not just summaries.

Yes. You have your own log files.

Do you provide a CGI-BIN personal directory?

Yes. A CGI-BIN is provided with each account.

What is CGI access?

CGI scripts (Common Gateway Interface) are used to provide things like counters, form responses, guestbooks, and many other interactive components. VIS Web Hosting gives you full CGI access. You can write your own scripts, or install premade PERL scripts.

Which languages are supported in CGI (eg., Bourne, shell, Perl, Java)?

Bourne, Shell, Perl, and Java are all supported and available.

How can I manage my email users (add/remove/update). How can I setup mail redirection for my users?

To add or delete POP boxes, use your personal Mail Manager at:

your___domain.com/menu

You redirect by editing the address, "un-forwarding" to the POP box (which deletes it if that's the only reference to it) and forwarding to whatever address you desire.

Do you offer backward compatability browser detection?

Yes.

Can I set up forms for secure transmission?

Yes.

Can we set up password protected areas with htaccess?

Yes.

May I promote my Web site with bulk email?

No. Spamming is in violation of our service agreement. There are legal and ethical issues involved in mass mailing of unsolicited email. Any users of our services who have sent a large number of unsolicited emails will have their accounts closed within 24 hours with no refunds.
